A Barrel-Born Collaboration

A few years ago, Desert Door Distillery was looking for a way to impart a whole new flavor onto their fine Texas Sotol. Their search brought them to Garrison Brothers Distillery, who offered up a set of barrels hand-selected by Master Distiller Donnis Todd and used to create their uncut, unfiltered Cowboy Bourbon®. These barrels added their unique notes to the Desert Door flavor profile, resulting in a rich, vibrant sotol bursting with caramel, vanilla, molasses, and baking spice. It’s everything that a collaboration between the only commercial distiller of sotol in the United States and the first legal bourbon distillery in Texas should be. Two iconic spirit brands, one unforgettable bottle.

Desert Door and Garrison Brothers are both Texas brands, born and bred. Desert Door is distilled in Driftwood; Garrison Brothers’ operation is located further west in Hye. Garrison Brothers was the first legal Texas whiskey distillery. Desert Door is presently the only commercial distiller of sotol in the United States. Both endeavor to create the world’s best spirit, in their respective categories. There’s a lot of common ground between Desert Door and Garrison Brothers, which makes for a very fortuitous collaboration. The cocktail feature below is designed to artfully incorporate our two Texas spirits. The Cosmic Cowboy was designed expressly for the holiday season. It’s perfect for a gathering of family and friends, or a cozy campfire singalong this holiday season.

The Cosmic Cowboy

Designed with the holidays in mind with a deliciously bold finish.

1 oz. Desert Door’s Oak-Aged Sotol Finished in Garrison Brothers Cowboy Bourbon Barrels
1 oz. Garrison Brothers Small Batch Bourbon
1/4 oz. Honey
1/4 oz. Liber & Co. Ginger Syrup
2 Dashes Cardamom Bitters
2 Dashes Chocolate Bitters
1 oz. Orange Juice
1/2 oz. Heavy Whipping Cream
1/2 in. Piece of Turmeric Chopped
Dehydrated Orange Wheel

In a shaking tin, muddle turmeric, add Desert Door Sotol, Garrison Brothers Small Batch Bourbon and honey. Stir vigorously until honey is combined. Add ginger syrup, bitters, orange juice, cream and ice to shaker and shake. Pour into coupe glass. Garnish with a dried orange wheel and shaved chocolate.
