A Barrel-Born Collaboration

The Desert Door and Garrison Brothers collaboration began with a simple request: Desert Door asked if they could use some of Garrison Brothers’ used barrels. When Garrison Brothers kindly obliged, Desert Door took their Oak-Aged Texas sotol and finished it in Garrison Brothers Cowboy Bourbon® barrels. Shortly thereafter, Garrison Brothers suggested partnering on an initiative that would pair the two Texas brands in delicious cocktails.

Desert Door and Garrison Brothers are both Texas brands, born and bred. Desert Door is distilled in Driftwood; Garrison Brothers’ operation is located further west in Hye. Garrison Brothers was the first legal Texas whiskey distillery. Desert Door is presently the only commercial distiller of sotol in the United States. Both endeavor to create the world’s best spirit, in their respective categories. There’s a lot of common ground between Desert Door and Garrison Brothers, which makes for a very fortuitous collaboration. The two cocktail features below are both designed to artfully incorporate our two Texas spirits. One, the Cosmic Cowboy, was designed expressly for the holiday season. And the other, the Ten 2 Ten, is a re-imagined Long Island iced tea.

Check out the recipes and how-to videos below.

Ten 2 Ten

A re-imagined Long Island iced tea.

3/4 oz. Desert Door’s Oak-Aged Sotol Finished in Garrison Brothers Cowboy Bourbon Barrels
3/4 oz. Garrison Brothers Small Batch Bourbon
2 oz. Fresh Lemonade
Dr. Pepper
Luxardo Cherry
Lemon Wheel

Add sotol, bourbon, lemonade, and ice to a shaker and shake vigorously. Pour over ice into a 12 oz glass. Top with Dr. Pepper. Garnish with a cherry and lemon if you wish. If you do not own a shaker, no sweat, you can either build in a mason jar with lid or in a glass and stir ingredients with a straw rather than shaking.

Cosmic Cowboy

Designed with the holidays in mind
with a deliciously bold finish.

1 oz. Desert Door’s Oak-Aged Sotol Finished in Garrison Brothers Cowboy Bourbon Barrels
1 oz. Garrison Brothers Small Batch Bourbon
1/4 oz. Honey
1/4 oz. Liber & Co. Ginger Syrup
2 Dashes Cardamom Bitters
2 Dashes Chocolate Bitters
1 oz. Orange Juice
1/2 oz. Heavy Whipping Cream
1/2 in. Piece of Turmeric Chopped
Dehydrated Orange Wheel

In a shaking tin, muddle turmeric. Add sotol, bourbon, and honey and stir vigorously until honey is combined. Add ginger syrup, bitters, orange juice, cream, and ice to the shaker and shake vigorously. Pull out your chocolate dipped-glass and pour the drink into it over ice. Add an orange wheel for garnish if you wish.

To prepare glasses, melt semi-sweet chocolate in a bowl or pan over boiling water. When chocolate is fully melted, dip half of the 8 oz glass lip into it then pull out, giving excess time to drip off. Sprinkle some Maldon Salt then add all glasses to the freezer when done. Leave glasses in the freezer for at least 10-20 minutes. Pull them out when you are ready to prepare your drinks.
